Raymarine New Open-Array Radar

Raymarine have just announced the launch of their two Magnum radar systems. These high-performance open-array radars feature ‘superior bird mode’ and ‘beam sharpening technology’. Magnum uses some of the radar technologies employed by the United States Coast Guard in their military-grade systems. In particular, it offers enhanced target tracking, tough reliable performance and superior image detail – packaged in a sleek open-array pedestal built to withstand the harshest marine environments.
 
Magnum is available in 4kW or 12kW power output options, with either a 4ft or 6ft antenna array. This system offers a maximum target identification range of up to 96nm for 12kW models – ideal for blue-water vessels – and up to 72nm for 4kW models. It makes a perfect companion for Raymarine’s recently launched Axiom and Axiom Pro multifunction navigation displays (MFDs) running LightHouse 3 operating systems. It is also compatible with LightHouse 2-based Raymarine MFDs.
 
Magnum features an advanced automatic bird mode that gives skippers the ability to see birds with greater accuracy at distances of up to 10nm. Consequently it helps anglers locate schooling fish faster. Its beam sharpening technology delivers a better than 1-degree bearing resolution for more detailed target separation, producing map-like coastal detail and superior long-range performance. Additionally, Magnum’s enhanced mini-automatic radar plotting aid (MARPA) offers accurate and reliable target tracking for that extra peace of mind when navigating busy waterways.
 
The 12kW system is clearly a blue-water cruising tool, but the smaller 4kW Magnum will be suited to most large pleasure boats. The starting price is £5,200 (inc. VAT), and it is available this summer.

Garmin GC 100 wireless camera
The Garmin GC 100 marine camera is a wireless Wi-Fi camera system designed for mariners who want to keep an eye on areas inside or around their boat. It has a compact footprint with a discreet IPX7-rated waterproof design, enabling it to be mounted in most places – even on the A-frame of a RIB. It streams high-quality 720p HD video directly to a compatible Garmin chartplotter – and any other chartplotter for that matter – connected to the same network.
 
The GC 100 can be installed to operate in total darkness, such as in an engine room. This is where it will appeal to many powerboaters, as it has an automatic night viewing facility. Courtesy of built-in IR illumination, it can see in total darkness up to 3 metres – certainly enough for the average engine bay. It can also operate in temperatures up to 60˚C, so can be mounted close to engines. It has a broad horizontal viewing angle of 160 degrees and a vertical angle of 90 degrees. Once hardwired to 10–30 DC, the camera is ready to use with a one-button set-up. Up to seven GC 100 cameras can be paired with the chartplotter, with the ability to view up to four camera feeds simultaneously.
 
Available now with a suggested retail price of £259.99, the GC 100 is compatible with the GPSMAP 8400/8600 and GPSMAP 7400/7600 series as well as the GPSMAP 10×2/12×2 and GPSMAP 7×2/9×2 series.
