Stronger Focus on Environmental Responsibility

The Southampton International Boat Show returns from 19–28 September 2025, renewing its commitment to environmental responsibility with two core initiatives: the ongoing Exhibitor Environmental Award and a new voluntary Carbon Offsetting Scheme. Both form part of the show’s Environmental Charter, designed to encourage proactive, measurable steps towards sustainability.

Launch of Carbon Offsetting Scheme

In partnership with Yacht Carbon Offset, the new scheme enables exhibitors to calculate and offset the carbon footprint of their show participation, covering stand build, travel, and accommodation. Exhibitors can opt in via the Exhibitor Manual, with fees set at £1.10 per square metre of stand space or £28.60 per marina berth. The funds will support a reputable carbon reduction project in a developing country, chosen jointly by British Marine and Yacht Carbon Offset.

Rachel Goult, Managing Director at Yacht Carbon Offset, explains that the scheme offers a simple way for exhibitors to take responsibility for their emissions while collecting vital data to monitor the show’s overall footprint.

Why Offset Carbon?

This approach complements emission reduction efforts by:

  • Lowering the event’s carbon footprint
  • Gathering data to identify high-emission areas
  • Driving positive, measurable change through collective action

Exhibitors entering the Environmental Award must participate in the Carbon Offsetting Scheme.

Environmental Award Returns for 2025

The Environmental Award celebrates exhibitors who demonstrate exceptional sustainability leadership at the show and within their broader business practices. Eligibility requires initiatives exceeding the baseline Environmental Charter standards, participation in the Carbon Offsetting Scheme, and submission of an application via the Exhibitor Manual by 29 August 2025.

Judging criteria include:

Waste and resource management

  • Reusable stand design
  • Low-impact logistics
  • Community and environmental engagement

The winner will be announced on Friday 19 September at 16:00 on the Boating Academy Stage.

Environmental Charter at the Heart of the Show

All exhibitors must meet mandatory environmental standards, such as eliminating single-use plastics, using sustainable materials, appointing a stand sustainability champion, and favouring digital communications.

Jasmine Hill, Events Director at British Marine, encourages all exhibitors to join in delivering a truly sustainable show experience.
