A contemporary take on the traditional sports cruiser concept. Greg Copp takes up the narrative.

Arriving this summer, the Focus 3X blends the comfort of a sports cruiser with the white-knuckle feel of an open sports boat. Amsterdam-based Focus Motor Yachts already have an established track record for luxury performance craft, but this 37-footer is the first of the innovative and contemporary new X line.

The 3X introduces eye-catching design features that enhance both its aesthetic and functional appeal. Its signature feature is its 2m-wide electric side windows, which together with the electric glass hardtop transform it from a sports cruiser to an open sports boat at the press of a button. There is nothing new about the concept of opening a coupé up to the elements, but the 3X’s extra-long one-piece windows, extra-long sunroof and open-back saloon do a good job of letting the outside in when you want it.

Power options are extensive. Focus claim that the biggest twin 430hp MerCruiser HO option will give this boat a 50-knot top speed. Second in the horsepower stakes are twin 400hp Mercury Verado V10s, which given this engine’s success since its launch will likely be the petrolhead’s first choice. If you want diesel power, the best option is twin 370hp Yanmar 8LV370Z ZTs, but these carry a higher price tag. The option of twin 320hp Volvo D4s on DPI sterndrives offers a sensible balance of performance and economy, and will likely appeal to those wanting to cover some sea miles. There are other lower-power engine options listed below, but I doubt many will choose them.

The Focus 3X offers the choice of two distinct cockpit layouts: a symmetrical design reminiscent of open day boats and a layout that is more characteristic of sports cruisers, thus maximising seating area. The customisation options extend through various features, making each Focus 3X uniquely aligned with the owner’s preferences. The cockpit sides of the Focus 3X are lined with leather and Alcantara upholstery, discreetly hiding storage compartments, refrigerators and other amenities. This design choice also allows for a high level of customisation. An innovative feature at the stern is the ‘transformer hydraulic swim platform’, which adjusts up to 50cm above and 60cm below its default position. This allows easy access to the sea or the pontoon, eliminating the need for a separate gangway. The aft deck is accentuated by wide, secure walk-around side decks that incorporate cleverly hidden cleats – a sophisticated touch typically found on larger yachts. Completing the design, the integrated sunbed at the bow melts into the yacht’s sleek silhouette, enhancing its aesthetics while providing luxurious lounging.

Central to the Focus 3X’s design is the helm. Created in supercar style, the helm is centrally located and features a 2m leather-trimmed dashboard equipped with twin 16” MFDs. Ideal ergonomics is achieved with two electrically adjustable helm seats with plenty of legroom – good whether seated or standing.

Below deck, the Focus 3X is generous with its standing height throughout the interior. It features a spacious master cabin and, for a boat of its size, a surprisingly large bathroom equipped with double sinks and a dedicated shower compartment. The saloon is thoughtfully designed and features a fully equipped galley along with a seating area that converts into additional sleeping space. It also includes a spacious 120L refrigerator. The use of fine materials such as premium woods and high-quality leather and Alcantara is indicative of the boat’s extensive personalisation options.
