- Mazu have done well to slip in a double berth and a compact luxury heads compartment with shower and vanity unit.
- I can’t imagine it is likely to get a huge amount of use as an overnighter, but if the local hotel is full, you have a plan B.
Mazu 42 Walk-Around
Greg Copp looks for signs of sibling rivalry in the Mazu family by examining the new 42 Walk-Around …
Mazu’s new 42 Walk-Around – which was launched at the end of last year – like its smaller sibling the 38 White Open Pearl is the product of Mazu’s CEO and chief designer Halit Yukay. Like the 38, it is built from a carbon/GRP cold moulded composite, making for a tough, low-weight hull. Crucial to its design, it is a fairly beamy boat, enabling equally wide side decks either side of the centre console, enclosed by a high freeboard. This is an important aspect in a boat that has social areas at each end, and is likely to be used as a party platform. Large walk-around boats may be more Miami than Med, but this boat is distinctly European with twin 435hp Volvo IPS600 pod drives sitting beneath her aft sun pad. The bathing platform is about as long as it gets for a 42ft boat, which is perfect for stern-to berthing, and naturally is equipped with a deck shower.
The double-helm set-up is probably the focal point of the boat, with a wide array of glass displays and two substantial shock-absorbing armchair seats with flip-down seat bolsters, should sitting prove too luxurious. The windscreen has that all-important gap under the T-top enabling a cooling draught. The galley is topside behind the helm, and comprises a sink, griddle, storage and essentially a big fridge. Behind it sits the secondary dining area, which is more likely to be used as a secondary worktop, given that six can comfortably sit around the forward table.
Below, the set-up is not surprisingly simple due to the lack of space. However, Mazu have done well to slip in a double berth and a compact luxury heads compartment with shower and vanity unit. I can’t imagine it is likely to get a huge amount of use as an overnighter, but if the local hotel is full, you have a plan B. The actual main section of the bed is located beneath the foredeck, so there is adequate sleeping space for two, with a TV built into the forward bulkhead at the foot of the bed, and storage at the head.
Being a fairly sprightly 8-tonne boat, two 435hp Volvo Penta IPS600s give the Mazu 42 Walk-Around a claimed top speed of 47 knots. Though this first boat is built in an eye-catching black, there are other colour options.
