Superfly GT 42
The new Superfly GT 42 from Flying Flipper is being hailed by its makers as a ‘game changer’ within the category of craft some might describe as a ‘superboat’. Construction of the first GT 42 rolls off the stocks any week now. HMS reports …
The Superfly GT 42 is quite a rare example of a boat that combines true driving and racing performance with first-rate family comfort, benefiting from a beautiful modern Scandinavian design that boasts some 40 years of history and experience. The new craft is an interesting fusion of power, elegance and utility and aims to really push the boundaries of sports boat driving and performance.
Interestingly, Flying Flipper have worked closely with award-winning Red Yacht Design on this project to specifically create a boat with a large amount of aesthetic appeal, both internally and externally. Flying Flipper’s racing history is a big part of the company’s heritage, and hence why the Superfly GT 42’s hull features an air-stepped design, originally designed/invented by Flying Flipper’s legendary boat designer and race driver Sigurd Isacsson. This aspect of the vessel’s antimony has also benefited from the additional R&D work the team at Red Yacht Design have afforded the hull in an effort to refine the hull form even more.
The Superfly GT 42 is produced using lightweight carbon materials, providing maximum strength but at minimum cost where weight is concerned. Other essential features include the automatically operated glass hardtop, and of course the great combinations of modern power solutions available to the GT 42. The latter include the option of either fitting two Mercury 400hp Verados or even a triple Seven Marine 627hp rig, giving an astonishing 1881hp on the transom! Noteworthy too is the fact that clients can order the Superfly GT 42 in a hybrid version, with two petrol outboard engines plus an electric Torqeedo motor rigged centrally. This hybrid rig then allows the user to switch from high performance to electric power when slow-speed propulsion is required for trolling or when navigating harbours, inland waterways and estuaries etc.
The new craft is apparently the only boat in this sector that offers a forward as well as an aft cabin. Flying Flipper’s desire is to create a socially orientated boat suited to its occupants enjoying their time afloat either in the fresh air or within the well-appointed, luxury accommodation, which includes a full-height master cabin plus a guest cabin, a high-tech galley, a heads/shower room, a full dining area and a cockpit with a spacious U-shaped sofa that within seconds transforms into forward-facing seats when underway. From a driver’s standpoint, much time and effort has been put into the critical matter of the helm’s ergonomics. This again is to emphasise the driving experience of what is primarily a leisure performance craft.
By all accounts, the Superfly GT 42 from Flying Flipper is a boat worth watching out for, and certainly one that appears to have the ability to uphold the good name of Scandinavian boatbuilding to a new generation of sports boat enthusiasts. At 750,000 euros, it’s hardly entry level, but how good it is to see the design and development of new models such as this being invested in once again, becoming part of the ‘rich tapestry’ of modern craft emerging in Europe post the 2008 financial downturn.
