Newly formed eco-friendly company Sea Clean UK are pioneering the launch of an innovative range of boat-cleaning products, which they say ‘achieve a high-quality finish without the need for water, thereby simplifying watercraft maintenance whilst also supporting global efforts to reduce water and plastic pollution’.

With the high ideal of wishing to revolutionise marine cleaning practices, the company is in the throes of introducing the UK marine industry’s first and only range of specialist waterless cleaning solutions – each carefully crafted with gentle ingredients and responsibly packaged to minimise impact on the environment.

Water-free, less impact

The product’s waterless technology means the cleaners can be sprayed directly onto any surface with no requirement for a hose and bucket. With a zero propensity to scratch or mark, depending on the type of Sea Clean product, users simply wipe the surface with a dry or damp microfibre before buffing off to reveal a pleasing shine. Its makers hope their new products will bring waterless cleaning benefits to a host of craft and marine locations.

Aron Lusty, Sea Clean UK fellow co-founder, told PBR: ‘The Waterless Wash Pro formulation is an innovative blend of chemical technology, including nanotechnology and Carnauba waxes. These components work to seal the boat’s gelcoat and wax-coat the surface, providing a layer of double protection. This not only repels water but also leaves the surface slick, shiny and equipped with anti-static protective qualities. As a result, dust is less likely to adhere to the surface, keeping it cleaner and shinier for longer than traditional washing methods. Our Waterless Wash is formulated with similar ingredients, but slightly watered down and excludes the Carnauba wax. This means it’s easier to buff off and therefore slightly quicker to use. In terms of our Daily Wipedown product, this a vinegar-based cleaner that is highly effective in dissolving salt deposits. It also features a pleasant citronella scent for an added touch of freshness. Some of our cleaners contain silicones, which is why a few of our products are not listed as biodegradable.’

Lusty continued: ‘I want to reassure PBR readers that the silicones we use are completely non-hazardous and safe for users, boats and the environment. In fact, the gentle high-grade silicone emulsions in our formulations are commonly found in everyday cosmetic products like face creams and sun lotions. Additionally, aside from these silicones, all of our cleaners are biodegradable.’

Sea Clean cleaners comply with the stringent regulations set by Scandinavian authorities, considered among the strictest in the world. They are accredited to industry-leading chemical standards such as BS EN ISO 9001 and 14001, and they align with the latest European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) regulations, Global Harmonisation System (GHS) classifications, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulations and REACH directives.

Additional aims

Joint company founder Louis Palmer-Smith explained: ‘Sea Clean are backing their product launch with a long-term company action plan to promote sustainability as well as inspiring others to help restore the marine environment through various initiatives and collaborations. In addition, we shall be allocating a percentage of each purchase to ocean clean-up projects. The strategy includes a commitment to collecting 10,000 bottles of plastics in its first year of operation and a schedule of beach clean-ups held during the summer. Plans are also underway to implement unique eco-friendly projects in partnership with stockists, chandleries and customers.’

In line with their mission to enable the safe collection and recovery of ocean-bound plastic waste, Sea Clean conducted extensive research to determine the most viable eco-friendly packaging, electing to use recycled HDPE plastic bottles, tested rigorously to last for several refills. With rising temperatures and the increasing likelihood of hosepipe bans in coming years, sustainable solutions of this type are aimed at countering the growing issue of water scarcity – an issue that has the potential to become ever more relevant and necessary with each passing year.
