Garmin have launched two more interesting additions to their seemingly ever-expanding range of electronics. The 12in GPSMAP 1222 and GPSMAP 1222xsv touch screen chartplotters are big in size, but small in price. They feature built-in wireless connectivity for Garmin’s new ActiveCaptain app and VIRB action camera integration. They also have a 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver for smooth on-screen navigation in both formats.
These plotters offer full-network compatibility for the Garmin Marine Network, which allows support for sharing sonar, charts, user data, radar, IP cameras and Panoptix all-seeing sonar sharing among multiple units. There is also NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 support for autopilots, digital switching, weather, VHF, AIS and other sensors.
Anglers will benefit from the xsv model, which comes equipped with built-in 1kW traditional CHIRP sonar, CHIRP ClearVü and CHIRP SideVü scanning sonar capability for a near-picture-quality view of what’s beneath the boat. The GPSMAP 1222/1222xsv Touch comes preloaded with a worldwide base map for general reference with support for optional BlueChart g2 Vision HD charts with Auto Guidance, satellite imagery and 3D perspectives.
SailAssist has also been integrated into both models, offering lay lines, tidal information, enhanced wind rose, a current slider and other elements that will be beneficial for powerboaters and sailors alike. Both models also offer integrated ANT support for use with the quatix 5 marine smartwatch, gWind Wireless 2 transducer, GNX Wind marine instrument and wireless remote controls. Additionally, they feature built-in Quickdraw Contours software – a free, easy-to-use tool that lets mariners instantly create personalised HD maps with 1ft contours.
The new GPSMAP 1222/122xsv Touch models are expected to be available in the spring of 2018 at an RRP of £2,479.99 and £2,659.99, respectively.
