A new custodian for Apache 555

Apache 555, one of the most recognisable names in British offshore powerboat racing, has entered a new era with Hampshire entrepreneur Peter Bonham Christie as her new custodian. As Christie put it, “you cannot own a piece of history like Apache, you are simply the custodian and must do your best to honour her past and ensure she lives on into the future.”

Not new to powerboating, Christie has raced internationally and also holds a class World Speed Record on Coniston Water. More recently, he has been restoring and racing Eilun, his 1896 Solent One Design Yacht.

A boat with deep racing pedigree

Built by Souter’s of Cowes in 1969 from cold-moulded triple diagonal cedar with one layer of mahogany, the 33ft Don Shead-designed hull first raced as HTS 858 for Ralph Hilton. After early difficulties with Leyland diesels, the boat later found success with Ford Sabres, including victory in the 1972 London to Monte Carlo race.

Renamed Apache by David Hagan, she enjoyed her finest period in 1979, winning the British and European Class II Championships before taking the World Class II title in Venice. Former team member John Buchanan recalled: “In 1979 we won 11 out of 13 races, we broke down in the first race because ‘DLH’ pressed to win the engines at that time did not take his enthusiasm!”

Back on the race circuit

After later restoration by Nick Wilkinson, Apache is now set to race again in the 2026 UKOPRA Championships and the Cowes Torquay race. Christie is also reuniting relatives and friends of the original team, reinforcing Apache’s long-standing family spirit as a new chapter begins.
