Celebrating Four Decades of a British Marina Landmark

MDL Marinas celebrated the 40th anniversary of Hythe Marina Village – the UK’s first purpose-built marina village.

Opened in 1985, Hythe Marina Village was a landmark in British marine development. Set on the western shore of Southampton Water, it features a 206-berth marina surrounded by elegant waterside homes, restaurants, shops and a boutique hotel.

A Vision Inspired by the Côte d’Azur

Modelled on Port Grimaud in the South of France, Hythe Marina Village introduced the concept of luxury waterside living to the UK. Officially launched in December 1984 by Sir Christopher Cockerell, inventor of the hovercraft, the site’s gala opening in 1985 drew national attention. Among the first boats through its lock were actor Arthur Lowe’s Edwardian steam yacht Amazon and Richard Branson’s record-breaking Atlantic Challenger. The marina also gained television fame as a filming location for the BBC’s Howards’ Way.

A Thriving Community and Boating Destination

“Hythe Marina Village is a signature development in MDL’s portfolio and a true icon of British marina design,” said Tim Mayer, MDL’s Sales and Marketing Director. “When it opened 40 years ago, it redefined what a marina could be. Today it’s not only a destination for boaters but a thriving community and lifestyle hub.”

To mark the anniversary, Hythe Marina Association hosted two special events. A residents’ Hog Roast and a Sail Past Spectacular.  A parade of decorated boats sailed a buoyed course on Southampton Water, with live commentary, food stalls, music and prizes.

Marina Manager Debbie Scott added, “The 40th anniversary was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the marina’s incredible history whilst looking forward to the next chapter.”
