Maritime leaders unite to tackle ocean plastic

A new industry alliance, the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS), has been launched to help drive measurable reductions in ocean plastic and operational waste. Founded by ocean impact organisation Seven Clean Seas (SCS), the alliance brings together companies including Berge Bulk and X-Press Feeders, alongside wider maritime partners.

Oceans under pressure

Oceans carry around 90% of global trade and support the livelihoods of more than 2 million seafarers. Yet with 14 million tonnes of plastic entering marine ecosystems annually, these waters face increasing strain. Although the maritime sector contributes only a small proportion of global plastic pollution, isolated cargo losses and poor handling practices can still cause preventable harm, particularly involving pellets, films and lightweight packaging.

A coordinated industry response

MACS builds on the IMO’s Plastic Marine Litter Action Plan and reflects growing momentum for collective action. Its aim is to help maritime organisations reduce plastic use, improve waste management and inspire progress across related industries.

SCS brings experience from some of the world’s most polluted coastal regions, where it develops certified projects that recover plastic while delivering community impact. MACS will focus on three priorities for 2026: sustainable procurement, improved vessel waste measurement and reduction, and stronger portside waste reception.

“Seven Clean Seas has always believed in collective action as the most powerful lever for change”

Tom Peacock-Nazil, Founder and Chairman of MACS

Voices from across the sector

Further support comes from founding members including Berge Bulk, X-Press Feeders, Britoil Offshore Services and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, each highlighting the shared responsibility to protect the oceans that sustain global trade.

MACS is now inviting additional members committed to advancing maritime sustainability.
