Compact emergency alerting for sea and land

Recent reports of a 13-year-old Australian swimming 4km to raise the alarm after his family was swept out to sea on stand-up paddleboards have underlined how quickly a routine day on the water can become an emergency.

Against that backdrop, Wescom Group is highlighting the Pains Wessex Miniflare Mk8 as a compact emergency alerting option for use both at sea and on land. The company positions the pack as suitable for dinghies, personal water craft, canoes, sailboards and stand-up paddleboards, while also noting its usefulness for remote land-based activities such as climbing and hiking.

Designed as a backup to mobile phones

The product is presented as a practical companion to a mobile phone rather than a replacement. Waterproof pouches may offer some protection, but signal loss, flat batteries and water ingress can all stop a distress call from being made.

Each lightweight pack contains nine red aerial flares. According to the supplied information, they reach a height of more than 40 metres, with each red distress flare burning for more than five seconds at 10,000 candela. Wescom Group says this makes them visible for at least five miles in daylight and more than 10 miles at night.

Easy to carry and use

The Miniflares are fired using a penjector mechanism, intended to make them easy to use with wet hands or while in the water. The compact pack can be carried in a dry bag or in a waterproof pocket in a jacket or buoyancy aid.

Having the ability to set off an internationally recognised distress signal is vital in an emergency. Miniflares are ideal as part of your essential kit, alongside your phone. By all means take your phone for convenience – but always carry proven safety equipment that could save your life.

The Pains Wessex Miniflare Mk8 retails at £74.95.
