A total of 3,260 kg of waste was removed from the seabed around Lošinj during the two-day eco initiative “The Sea Knows, the Island Never Forgets”, held on 5–6 April 2025.
Organised by the Blue World Institute and the SUBSEASON Diving Centre, the clean-up mobilised 224 people, including 106 divers from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Germany. Volunteers also took part at locations including the port of Mali Lošinj, Nerezine’s small harbours, Susak, and Silver Bay in the Čikat area.
The event forms part of the European Commission’s “European Maritime Day in My Country” campaign, which promotes ocean conservation and sustainable blue economy practices.
“This initiative continues to expand across the archipelago, with increasing support from individuals, businesses, and institutions,” said Jelena Basta, President of the Blue World Institute. “It’s a powerful example of community-driven environmental action.”
Supporters include the Town of Mali Lošinj, the local tourist board, Lošinj Hotels & Villas, Jadranka turizam d.o.o., Cres-Lošinj Municipal Services, the Lošinj Museum, and several local clubs, schools, and NGOs.
“Everyone has a role to play in protecting our marine ecosystem,” said Ante Vranješ, Executive Director at Jadranka turizam d.o.o. “By working together, we’re helping ensure a cleaner and more sustainable Lošinj.”
The island has previously been recognised with the Green Destinations Gold Award for responsible tourism and continues to invest in environmental education and awareness.
