UN Tourism and E1 Series Unite for Sustainable Sports Tourism

UN Tourism and E1 Series, the world’s first all-electric raceboat championship, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote sustainable mobility and tourism through sport. The agreement was formalised in Monaco, a hub of sustainable marine mobility, and reflects both organisations’ commitment to advancing clean marine technologies and sustainable tourism worldwide.

Alejandro Agag Named UN Tourism Special Ambassador

E1 Series founder and Chairman Alejandro Agag has been appointed UN Tourism’s Special Ambassador for Sport, recognising his dedication to integrating sustainability into motorsport. He emphasised that the partnership demonstrates how sport can act as a catalyst for positive environmental change by combining E1’s electric marine technology with UN Tourism’s global reach.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said the collaboration highlights the growing potential of sports tourism to drive sustainable development, economic growth, and cultural exchange.

Global Race Series Driving Awareness

E1 races visit destinations including Jeddah, Doha, Dubrovnik, and soon Lagos and Miami, engaging local communities and promoting awareness of marine conservation. The series aligns closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water

The partnership will focus on raising awareness for marine ecosystem protection and supporting initiatives that strengthen the environmental and economic benefits of sustainable tourism.

The Growing Impact of Sports Tourism

Sports tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors, valued at $685 billion in 2024 with a 17.5% annual growth rate. Over 180 million international tourists travel each year to attend sports events, creating cultural connections and long-term community benefits.

Through this collaboration, UN Tourism and E1 aim to highlight the role of sports in fostering sustainable economic and environmental practices, creating memorable experiences while supporting marine preservation.
