Volvo Penta has unveiled its first fully electric marine propulsion range, extending its proven IPS (Inboard Performance System) platform into the world of zero-emissions technology. Aimed initially at the commercial marine sector, the new electric IPS range is designed to offer efficiency, control, and sustainability, while simplifying integration for operators and shipbuilders.
This new electric offering complements the hybrid IPS solutions introduced earlier in 2024, giving customers greater flexibility to choose propulsion systems that suit their operational needs. The electric motor is directly coupled to the IPS driveline and available in twin, triple, or quadruple setups—preserving hallmark IPS benefits like forward-facing propulsion, Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), and joystick steering.
With power outputs ranging from 220 kW to 1.1 MW per driveline, the range will scale up to 4.5 MW for quad installations. Launching in Q4 2025 with the IPS900E (515 kW), Volvo Penta aims to electrify all five drivelines in the IPS range.
Volvo Penta state, operators will experience seamless drive mode selection through a fully integrated Human-Machine Interface (HMI) connected to an Energy Management System (EMS). Drive modes include Pure Electric, Hybrid Electric, and Hybrid Fuel. Core features such as Autopilot, Assisted Docking, and Dynamic Positioning System remain central to the offering.
Additionally, Volvo Penta offers marine generator sets—fixed or variable speed—to serve as either the main power source or battery support. These onboard gensets can balance loads, provide redundancy, and extend service intervals, enhancing operational uptime.
Volvo Penta’s new range supports scalable integration with qualified third-party partners. The solution includes everything from propulsion systems and energy storage to DC grid infrastructure and the EMS. For customers seeking an end-to-end solution, Volvo Penta’s in-house capabilities through its subsidiary ZEM are also available.
