Easy to fit and highly responsive to the wheel, this system is ideal for smaller craft.
Nominated at the METS show last November for the DAME Design Awards, this electric steering system epitomises simplicity. Designed for outboard engines up to 200hp, it is aimed at the retrofit market.
Installation is straightforward, requiring only a simple electrical connection from the transom-mounted steering unit to the supplied helm steering assembly, onto which the wheel is mounted. Once connected to the engine’s steering linkage, the transom-mounted steering unit has a direct two-wire connection to the boat’s 12V battery.
This retrofit is relatively simple, with the most involved aspect being the installation of the helm steering unit. For new builds, it is no more complex to fit than any OEM electronic steering system, although whether it can be fine-tuned for steering response remains unclear. It offers a five-turn lock-to-lock response, ensuring it is no sluggard in terms of performance.
At a cost of €2,300, it represents a realistic option for smaller engines, which may otherwise only be supplied with OEM hydraulic or cable steering.
