Orkney Pilothouse 27 Gen II

Making its world debut at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show, Orkney‘s Pilothouse 27 Gen II represents a comprehensive evolution of the popular motor cruiser. The second-generation model showcases a meticulously redesigned interior, updated exterior profile, and more contemporary styling whilst retaining the classic ‘Orkney DNA’ that has defined the brand for decades.

Built around Arthur Mursell’s proven hull design from TT Boat Designs, the Gen II maintains the excellent seakeeping characteristics that made the original Pilothouse 27 popular amongst serious cruising enthusiasts. The generous waterline length, substantial freeboard, and heavy displacement provide sure-footedness in challenging conditions that belies the boat’s 27-foot length.

Interior Layout Transformation

The most significant changes centre on the internal layout configuration. Responding to customer feedback and evolving expectations, Orkney’s design team embarked on a comprehensive transformation of the Pilothouse 27‘s interior. The result is a space that seamlessly blends practicality, comfort, and flexibility.

The re-engineered helm station, taken from the recently developed Pilothouse 25 model, offers a commanding position with improved sightlines and enhanced driver comfort for extended voyages. The flexible seating arrangements represent a particular highlight, with modular configurations that quickly adapt for socialising, dining, or cruising. A new dinette easily converts between a forward-facing co-pilot seat, extended dining area, or additional berth as required.

Accommodation Layout

The accommodation layout centres on the open-plan, light and airy wheelhouse offering commanding panoramic views through alloy-framed windows. The spacious dinette provides a comfortable area for dining and relaxation, converting into an additional berth when required. Forward of the wheelhouse, a starboard-side enclosed toilet and shower compartment offers full standing headroom, opposite a generous hanging locker. The forward double cabin berth provides comfortable sleeping for two with generous under-berth storage.

Smart Storage Solutions

Storage solutions have been comprehensively addressed throughout the boat. Smart stowage compartments and integrated lockers ensure clutter-free living, supporting both day trips and longer passages. The upgraded galley features increased worktop space, premium materials, and improved appliance integration, whilst large windows and hatches maximise natural light and ventilation in the wheelhouse.

Contemporary Exterior Styling

The exterior styling evolution is immediately apparent in the Gen II’s modern superstructure with clean lines. The re-styled wheelhouse and foredeck feature sharper lines, an extended windscreen, and subtle hull graphics that lend a dynamic edge to the profile whilst incorporating classic Orkney design elements.

Enhanced deck layout priorities include wide side decks, non-slip surfaces, and well-placed handrails for safe movement around the boat. The aft deck features a new layout focused on safety and comfort, with improved seating and a deeper, more secure area. Access to the large bathing platform is now simpler than ever, whilst the self-draining cockpit maintains safe, deep coamings.

Premium materials and detailing extend from marine-grade stainless steel hardware to hand-finished joinery, with each element selected for durability and aesthetic appeal.

Performance and Range

The refined hull form, combined with efficient propulsion options, delivers spirited performance and impressive fuel economy. The hull’s fine entry and deep forefoot ensure a soft ride in choppy seas, whilst ample beam aft provides stability at anchor or underway. Larger fuel and water capacities, combined with efficient hull design, enable longer adventures and reduced running costs.

Performance figures include up to 27 knots maximum speed with a range exceeding 250 nautical miles, depending on engine selection and conditions. Single diesel inboard or single/twin petrol outboard options are available, with power ranging from 195hp to 250hp depending on configuration.
