Overview

Currently powering Vessev’s nine-metre VS-9 electric hydrofoiling catamaran, the VS-Drive sets a new benchmark for performance and efficiency in zero-emission marine transport. It will also scale to Vessev’s forthcoming 12-metre and 18-metre models, as well as a new recreational vessel soon to launch.

Actively Cooled and Built to Perform

At the heart of the VS-Drive is an internal closed-loop cooling system, allowing the motor to perform in tropical climates where many electric propulsion units struggle. Operating consistently below 50°C, well under its 100°C tolerance limit, the system maintains high-torque output without thermal degradation.

The VS-Drive began as a clean-sheet design to overcome one of the trickiest challenges in electric marine propulsion: overheating,” explains Max Olson, Vessev’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer. “The result is sustained performance and reliability, even in demanding conditions.”

Direct Drive Efficiency

By connecting the motor directly to the propeller, the VS-Drive eliminates gearboxes and long driveshafts. This reduction in moving parts not only minimises energy loss but enhances efficiency and reliability. Delivering a continuous output of 65kW (90hp) and 400Nm of torque, the drive achieves impressive thrust with whisper-quiet operation.

At low speeds, the motor is virtually silent, while at high speeds normal conversation levels are maintained beside the unit. This acoustic refinement enhances passenger comfort and reduces fatigue for commercial operators.

Modular, Durable and Intelligent

The VS-Drive’s modular design allows for straightforward servicing, with each component easily disassembled for inspection or replacement. Long-life bearings provide up to 40,000 miles of operational lifespan, and onboard sensors continually monitor system health in real time.

Mounted via a vectorable rudder system, the drive offers superb low-speed manoeuvrability. When integrated with Vessev’s fully retractable foiling system, it allows operation across a variety of marina configurations and sea states.

Designed for Global Operations

The VS-Drive currently powers the VS-9 in daily service with New Zealand’s largest ferry operator. With customers across three continents awaiting delivery, Vessev state their propulsion technology is poised to influence electric passenger transport on a global scale.

CEO Eric Laakmann describes the VS–Drive as “a key enabler of what’s possible in electric marine transport,” highlighting its combination of quiet operation, cooling efficiency and adaptability.

Supported by co-funding from the New Zealand government’s Low Emission Transport Fund, administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), the VS-Drive reflects a national and commercial commitment to sustainable innovation.
