Boating with kids

Boating with kids can be one of the most wonderful family experiences – sunshine on the water, new places to explore, and the kind of quality time that’s hard to find on land. But these days, prising children away from their screens and keeping them engaged can be a challenge. Whether you’re planning a weekend hop or a full-blown coastal adventure, here are our tried and tested tips for keeping young crew members happy, safe, and smiling onboard.

Tip 1: Underway with Snacks

Snacks are to kids what fuel is to engines – essential! Keep a stash of healthy bites and treats within reach: fruit bars, sliced apples, crackers, and the occasional sweet for when morale dips. A special ‘treat’ cool bag works wonders, though maybe skip the raisins, as they have a habit of ending up in the bilge!

Tip 2: Plan for Play

Pack a small ‘boat bag‘ with books, colouring pads, and sticker packs. Playing cards and travel-sized board games are great for longer passages. I Spy is always a hit – our old copy of I-SPY on the Water (Michelin) has been well used, but there are plenty of similar books. For older kids, bird or marine life spotting adds an adventurous twist – and you may even glimpse a dolphin.

Tip 3: Give Them a Job

Children love to feel useful. Younger ones can coil ropes, scrub decks with bubbles, or hand out snacks. Older kids might enjoy helping with navigation or filling in the logbook. Putting out fenders and tying up safely are brilliant ways to build confidence and boating skills.

Tip 4: Water Breaks – Literally

If conditions allow, anchoring up and jumping in is the ultimate reset button. Water fights, paddleboarding, or a short swim can turn grumpiness into giggles in minutes. And don’t forget to keep water bottles topped up to ward off dehydration and motion sickness.

Tip 5: Create a Cosy Spot

Even the most energetic adventurers need downtime. Set up a shaded corner with cushions or sleeping bags where they can nap, read, or just watch the waves. Familiar places or soft toys go a long way towards making the boat feel like home.

Tip 6: Keep Safety Fun, Not Scary

Safety equipment and rules are non-negotiable, but they don’t have to be dull. Let younger children personalise their life jackets with stickers or badges. Make wearing them the norm from day one, so it becomes second nature rather than a battle. Practise ‘man overboard‘ drills as a game – kids love a bit of drama!

Tip 7: Flexible Itineraries Win

Rigid schedules and impatient kids are a recipe for stress. Build in flexibility – if they’re happy at anchor in a quiet bay, stay put. If they’re restless, move on. Sometimes the best days afloat are the ones where you tear up the plan and follow the fun.

Tip 8: Screen Time? It's OK

Yes, purists might wince, but let’s be realistic: a tablet loaded with films or games can be a lifesaver on longer trips or in rough weather. Balance it with active time on deck, and don’t feel guilty about deploying a little digital distraction when you need it.

Tip 9: Involve Them in the Adventure

Kids love exploring, so let them help choose the destination. Whether it’s a beach with rock pools, a harbour with an ice cream shop, or a bay where seals hang out, giving them a say makes them feel invested. Even toddlers can spot buoys or point out other boats – engagement is everything.

Tip 10: Remember: Bored Kids = Creative Kids

A bit of boredom isn’t the end of the world. In fact, some of the best childhood memories come from whiling away hours on deck, inventing games, or simply watching the water go by. Resist the urge to over-schedule every moment. Sometimes doing ‘nothing’ is exactly what they need.

Boating with children takes patience, preparation, and a good sense of humour, but the rewards are huge. The skills they learn, the confidence they build, and the memories you make together are worth every soggy sandwich and mislaid sun hat. So stock up on snacks, pack the games, and get underway – your young crew is ready for adventure!
