Falmouth Harbour upgrades mooring infrastructure

Falmouth Harbour has invested £50,000 in new high-capacity mooring buoys to support superyachts and large commercial vessels visiting the port.

The new Caldy and Frigate buoys replace post-WW2 steel Admiralty buoys that had reached the end of their operational life. The investment forms part of Falmouth Harbour’s ongoing infrastructure modernisation programme and reflects rising demand from larger visiting vessels, which bring additional revenue to the harbour and wider benefit to the local marine sector and community.
The 3x2m buoys, with 7000kg buoyancy, were designed and built by Plymouth-based AIS Marine and installed by Seawide Services. Unlike the previous steel buoys, the new self-fendering design can absorb impacts, helping to protect both vessels and the buoy itself if contact occurs.

The introduction of the new mooring buoys in Falmouth has been very well received by the Superyachts we have sent there so far this year. With the switch from steel to the new design buoys there is a far lower chance of any damage to the vessels using them – which means Captains and their crews feel more comfortable using the moorings.
Falmouth has always been a natural haven for large vessels. This investment builds on that strength, providing modern, high-capacity moorings that meet the expectations of today’s operators while retaining the flexibility and ease of access that sets the Harbour apart.
Strategically positioned within Falmouth’s deep, sheltered waters, the moorings provide an alternative to berthing alongside for superyachts and commercial operators seeking efficient turnaround.
AIS Marine’s Tim Phillips says the systems are designed for reliable performance in high-load environments, with minimal maintenance compared with traditional steel buoys.
