New Kontra rescue boat delivered for Southampton

Wiltshire maritime company Specialist Small Craft Ltd says it has supplied the first vessel for the newly formed Southampton Independent Lifeboat service.

The purpose-built Kontra R450CC is intended for rapid-response operations on Southampton Water. According to Specialist Small Craft, the boat has been designed to launch within ten minutes and has a sufficiently low profile to operate beneath low bridges.

Powered by a Tohatsu MFS60 outboard, the R450CC (although pictured here on a SBS Trailer) is launched using a specially designed trolley supplied by Extreme Trailers. Specialist Small Craft describes the polyethylene boat as a robust, unsinkable platform intended to support the volunteer lifeboat crew as it works towards full operational readiness.

Stationed beneath the Itchen Bridge, the volunteer crew is expected to provide cover across the upper Southampton Water area and the rivers Test and Itchen.

Polyethylene construction for rescue operations

This lifeboat will be used for urban search and rescue on Southampton Water. Unlike inflatable lifeboats, the Kontra is produced from tough polyethylene, and able to cope with unseen underwater objects without risk of puncture. These boats have a proven pedigree and were used extensively across Europe during Storm Boris in 2024.

Specialist Small Craft supplies bespoke vessels based on the Kontra range of multi-purpose craft. The company says the boats combine impact-resistant, low-maintenance polyethylene construction with multi-chamber buoyancy.

According to Specialist Small Craft, Kontra boats are used in the UK for professional, utility and commercial applications including emergency services and flood rescue operations, commercial dive services and safety craft for sailing clubs.
