This eye-catching engine will be a great power option for the sub-8m sector.

Launched at the NEC show in February, this new take on the DF250 is more than just a paint job. Kuro in Japanese means ‘deep black’, and without a doubt the new matt black colour scheme is spot on. However, under its skin, the new Kuro, or DF250AUNX to use its official title, has some interesting ‘tweaks’ over the stock DF250.

Externally, at a glance, it looks much like the standard DF250.

This engine was originally aimed at the US bass boat market, but its design lends it to other sectors where top speed is important. It is built strictly for single fitment. Why? Because the skeg has been ‘sculptured’ to counteract the torque reaction of a single engine fitment. Suzuki have effectively ‘shaved out slightly’ the starboard side of the skeg to create an indent. This is claimed to completely counteract the torque reaction from which a boat fitted with a single engine suffers. How effective this proves to be at speed will be discovered once we see this engine out on the water. There is also the question of low-speed prop walk, where the hydrodynamics–skeg relationship will be totally different to that at planing speeds. I suspect prop walk will still be evident when berthing. Suzuki have also ‘sharpened and slimmed down’ the forward end of the gearbox torpedo housing to reduce drag, as seen with race engines, and have fitted a new dual water inlet to enhance engine cooling.

The 4L 24-valve DOHC V6 engine has been upgraded with new electronic mapping that increases the rev range from 5700 to 6000rpm. There is a new top cowling that has reworked air intake louvres to provide a better air supply, as well as improved cooling. A new and enhanced air filtration system strips out water particles that would otherwise impact on combustion efficiency and engine life. We understand that Suzuki have also reworked the profile of the inlet camshaft, which with their variable valve timing system enables a greater degree of valve timing overlap. In simple terms, this means the inlet and exhaust valves being briefly open simultaneously. This would come into effect at high engine speed, providing a greater induction charge of air into the combustion chamber, which is where this top-end power boost will come from. The end result is a motor that can rev higher with a stronger top-end power delivery. Finally, the upper clamp brackets have been improved with stiffer bushings to increase stability at speed.

The sharpened torpedo housing has new dual water intakes.

The DF250AUNX, which will only be available for single installations, also benefits from Suzuki technologies such as Suzuki Precision Control, the drive-by-wire throttle system, auto-trim, keyless start and, of course, Lean Burn Fuel Control.
