Finnmaster Pilot 8: an all-weather family cruiser that means business

There’s something refreshingly straightforward about the Pilot 8. In a market increasingly filled with boats trying to be all things to all people, the Finnmaster instead feels grounded in the realities of how most owners actually use their boats – it’s practical, comfortable and easy to live with.

The enclosed wheelhouse broadens the Pilot 8’s appeal considerably. It feels equally happy running in bright sunshine or pushing on when conditions become less predictable, extending both the boating season and the confidence to use it.

The asymmetrical deck layout works well, with the boat’s generous beam creating a wide and secure starboard side deck that makes moving forward feel easy and safe underway. High gunwales and rails, along with plentiful handholds add to that confidence, particularly for families boating with younger children onboard.

Storage is another strong point. There’s plenty of it throughout the boat and the integrated fender holders are a neat example, helping keep the deck clear and uncluttered.

The seating aft provides a comfortable place to sit underway and the large swim platforms further reinforce the Pilot 8’s family-friendly credentials. Optional canvas sides also allow the cockpit space to become more enclosed when conditions turn, adding to the boat’s all-weather appeal.

The wheelhouse is where the Pilot 8 really begins to reveal its strengths. Large windows and the sliding sunroof stop the cabin feeling enclosed. Open the roof back on a good day and it still feels connected to the outside environment, but when conditions turn there’s a reassuring sense of shelter to the layout.

The reverse-angle windscreen works particularly well, giving excellent forward visibility while also helping reduce glare. The low side coamings of the coash roof do interrupt sightlines through tighter turns and impinge slightly on the crew’s view from the cabin – an example of styling compromising outright practicality.

The helm feels comfortable and adaptable whether seated or standing, with the adjustable wheel and supportive seating working well for both of us at different heights. The starboard-side helm door also quickly proves its worth, particularly when coming alongside or single-handing. Combined with the bow thruster and Skyhook system fitted to our test boat, slow-speed manoeuvring feels remarkably straightforward.

Thoughtful practical details continue throughout the helm area too such as demisters to improve visibility in poor conditions. The helm seat also rotates and slides to integrate with the dinette when stationary, helping the cabin feel more sociable at anchor.

Inside, the Pilot 8 balances practicality with enough teak features to give warmth to avoid feeling overly functional. The combination of grey upholstery, white GRP and teak detailing gives the cabin a clean Scandinavian feel, and large side opening windows make everything feel airy. Behind the helm seat is a compact galley with options for a fridge and hob, while the storage bins behind the sink are the kind of small detail that make the space feel properly thought through. The dinette initially feels a little compact, although reversible seating and a table conversion into a crash bunk add flexibility.

Headroom is impressive throughout, even for taller occupants, and the accommodation feels genuinely usable for weekends away. Below decks, the main cabin has plenty of light thanks to the skylight and long windows and a neat cushioned seat adds to the sense that this is a space you could actually spend time in. The second cabin in particular is well executed, with its own window and reading lights helping it feel far more inviting than many compact mid-cabin arrangements. It’s billed as a double, although in reality it feels better suited to two children than two adults.

The heads compartment is another pleasant surprise, offering excellent headroom alongside smart finishes including a black countertop, stainless sink and electric toilet.

The Pilot 8 feels particularly well suited to families or couples who want a boat they can use regularly rather than simply waiting for perfect summer days. It has enough performance to make longer coastal runs enjoyable, but its real strength lies in the feeling of security it gives you: the protected wheelhouse, safe movement around deck and practical accommodation all make it feel manageable for day and weekend cruising. It would also suit owners moving up from an open day boat who want more shelter and weekend ability, without stepping into something that feels too large or complicated to handle.
