RNLI rescue figures reveal another busy year

The RNLI has released its 2025 rescue figures, showing that lifeboat crews saved 272 lives during one of the charity’s busiest years on record. With more than 9,000 launches across its 238 lifeboat stations in the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands, the figures equate to 25 launches every day.

The data offers a clear picture of how wide-ranging that demand remains. RNLI crews launched 713 times to sailing vessels, 951 times to motorboats, 946 times to people in the water and 319 times to walkers and runners.

Animal rescues also rose. Lifeboats launched 179 times to animals in 2025, up from 163 in 2024. The charity notes that these call-outs help prevent owners from putting themselves in danger by attempting rescues themselves. Most involved dogs, though crews also responded to three sheep, one whale and a horse.

Rescue stories behind the numbers

Among those rescued was Mandy Galloway, a mother of four who got into difficulty while paddleboarding off Kingsbarns in Scotland after being caught in 30mph offshore winds.

‘I remember my teeth chattering so much I thought they would break – I have never been that cold before.

‘There was no panic – I just thought, you are going to die here.

‘I didn’t even hear the lifeboat, seeing the crew just felt like a dream. I couldn’t believe there were people there. I had just accepted I wasn’t going to be saved.

‘I’m so grateful for the actions of the RNLI that day and to have been able to be reunited with the crew to say thank you in person is a something I’ll never forget.’

Chris Haffenden, rescued after being cut off by the tide at Birling Gap near Newhaven, said: ‘Not everyone realises the RNLI crew are volunteers who step away from their families and work to do this, but those heroes saved me, and it’s very humbling.’

Kate Eardley, head of global drowning prevention at the RNLI, said the figures show “just how quickly a day at the coast can change”.
