Why water is good for your mental health
Step onto a boat, paddleboard, or kayak and within minutes the world ashore begins to fade. The deadlines, the emails, the noise of everyday life – all of it slips into the background. In its place comes something simpler: the sound of water against the hull, the rhythm of paddles, sunlight on the waves.
A growing body of research shows that spending time on or near water has measurable benefits for our mental health. Research from the University of Exeter’s European Centre for Environment and Human Health into ‘blue spaces’ – rivers, lakes, and coasts – has found that these environments have the potential to reset the mind, emotions, and body. The BlueHealth project, a European Union–funded research programme carried out between 2016 and 2020, demonstrated that even short, regular visits to the water can improve mood and reduce anxiety.
Here are five science-backed ways that being on the water can nurture your mental wellbeing.
