The Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) and the British Marine Boat Retailers and Brokers Association (BRBA) have introduced a new joint industry-standard contract, the BRBA/ABYA Sales Purchase Agreement. This initiative, part of their strategic alliance announced at the Southampton International Boat Show 2024, aims to enhance professional standards in yacht brokerage.
Designed to provide brokers with a legally robust framework, the contract improves clarity and consistency in yacht transactions while offering greater consumer protection. It will be reviewed annually to stay aligned with industry best practices and regulatory developments. Both associations recommend its adoption by their members.
The boat sale agreement was developed under the leadership of Peter Norris, Chair of ABYA’s Regulatory Committee, and Chris Manners, BRBA Committee member. Their collaboration ensures a standardised approach to yacht sales that benefits both brokers and clients.
Alastair Walton, Chair of BRBA, described the contract as a “major step forward” in professionalising yacht brokerage. Chris Ibbotson, Chair of ABYA, emphasised its role in supporting brokers with a legally sound, transparent process.
The initiative follows previous collaborations, including Practical Yacht Broker Courses, and supports wider industry efforts such as lobbying for pooled client accounts and VAT evidence standardisation.
The boat sales purchase agreement contract is now available for ABYA and BRBA members via their respective websites:
