Bosch Engineering’s new electric boat drive makes first on-water debut at Grand Pavois

At the Grand Pavois boat show (22nd to 27th September), Bosch Engineering is running its new Electric Drive for Marine Applications (EDM) in live operation for the first time. Visitors to the show can experience the 400-volt system for themselves aboard a dedicated demonstration sport boat. According to Bosch Engineering, the boat’s performance on the water shows that zero-emission boating need not compromise on acceleration or driving enjoyment.

The EDM is described by Bosch Engineering as a ready-to-install, high-voltage complete solution for sport boats and yachts. The compact inboard system brings together the electric motor, power electronics, gearbox and control unit in a single unit, and draws on technology already proven in Bosch’s commercial vehicle range. According to Bosch the system delivers a peak output of 140 kW (190 hp) and 120 kW of continuous power, while weighing around 180 kg, giving it a power density of approximately 0.7 kW/kg and sets a benchmark within its class. For higher power demands, the EDM can be scaled up into a twin-drive setup.

Bosch Engineering says it offers shipyards, integrators and naval architects application-specific consulting on selecting a suitable battery system, and provides support throughout a project, from the initial integration concept through to final commissioning on the water.

The dynamic capabilities of the EDM are being demonstrated on a 6.5-metre test boat at the show. The system’s peak output of 140 kW underlines its sporting potential: according to the company’s own test measurements, the boat needs just four seconds to reach planing speed and 14 seconds to reach its top speed of 30 knots.
