Colin Jelf, the experienced Kent-based powerboat racer, emerged as the early leader in the 2025 Circuit Powerboat Association British Championship following a dramatic opening round at Oulton Broad over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Racing in the fiercely competitive F2 class, where boats reach speeds of up to 100mph, Jelf competed as a guest driver for the Kingfisher Fire & Security Team. Piloting a Molgaard hull under blustery conditions, Jelf quickly adapted to both boat and weather, showing pace throughout qualifying.
In a closely fought session, Jelf was narrowly beaten to pole by Ian Blacker, separated by just 0.2 seconds. The opening heat, however, saw Jelf launch strongly from the start, taking an early lead and holding position throughout the ten-lap race to take the win.
Heat two presented challenges, as Jelf’s engine failed to start, giving Blacker a clear path to victory and setting up a decisive final heat.
As the final race commenced, Jelf found himself in a tight battle with Blacker and Hoult. Despite Blacker having the inside line into the first turn, Jelf held firm and maintained the lead. Over the next ten laps, all three drivers pushed hard, but Jelf remained composed, avoiding errors and maintaining a consistent pace to cross the line first.
The win placed Jelf at the top of the British Championship standings.
Reflecting on the event, Jelf said: “The racing was intense but I knew the boat could perform. She handled well, and I’m grateful to Kingfisher Fire & Security for lending me the boat. Thanks also to Jelf Racing and our sponsors for their support.”
The team also extended thanks to Lowestoft & Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club for hosting the event under testing weather conditions.
