Electric boat fast charging arrives at Lymington Harbour

Lymington Harbour has installed a new Aqua superPower Aqua 75 marine fast charger, giving electric boats visiting and operating from the harbour access to high-power charging. The Aqua 75 delivers up to 75kW of DC fast charging, which Aqua superPower says allows compatible vessels to recharge significantly faster than with conventional AC charging. It will serve leisure and commercial users as the number of electric vessels on the south coast grows. Lymington, on the edge of the New Forest and facing the Solent, is a major sailing and boating destination, and the company sees it as a strategically important site for electric marine charging.

What is The Electric Seaway project?

The installation forms part of The Electric Seaway, a £3.2 million UK government-backed project led by Aqua superPower and ZPN Energy to build marine charging infrastructure along the UK’s south coast. Launched in 2023 with funding through the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), with Innovate UK as the main delivery partner, it supports leisure and commercial vessels under 24 metres and aims to develop a scalable charging model that can be replicated elsewhere.

Aqua superPower announced the successful demonstration of the project in 2025, with eight new charging sites delivered. Locations include MDL Ocean Village, the Isle of Wight, Fowey, Chichester Harbour and Falmouth, and the project has also explored battery-backed charging at Fowey Harbour as a way of overcoming infrastructure constraints.

Why did Aqua superPower choose Lymington?

Lymington is exactly the kind of strategic location we need to support the growth of electric boating in the UK. It is a globally recognised sailing destination with a busy mix of leisure and commercial marine activity, and providing reliable fast charging here helps make electric propulsion a more practical option for boat owners and operators.

The Electric Seaway was designed to demonstrate what a connected network of marine charging infrastructure can achieve, and installations such as Lymington are an important part of that vision. By putting high-power charging where vessels actually operate, we are helping to remove one of the key barriers to wider adoption of electric propulsion and giving boat users greater confidence to make the transition.

How will Lymington Harbour use the new charger?

Installing a marine fast charger at Lymington is directly aligned with our Climate Commitment Policy, which sets out our ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and halve our carbon footprint by 2030. But it was also important to us that we became part of a wider charging network, rather than simply installing a charger in isolation. Giving boaters the confidence to migrate to electric requires a network of reliable charging locations, and the connections with nearby sites in Chichester, Cowes and Poole are an important part of that.

We also want to lead by example. We are already working to migrate our own work and patrol boats to electric. Having access to fast charging makes those conversions more practical and more achievable, while strengthening Lymington’s role as a key location within the emerging marine charging network.

Ryan Willegers, CEO of Lymington Harbour

Aqua superPower describes the Lymington installation as another step towards a south coast charging corridor able to support electric leisure craft, workboats and other commercial vessels.
