Kressbronn am Bodensee, March 13th, 2024 – German e-mobility startup JayKay introduces the latest iteration of its e-Fin. Version 2.0 makes water sports like standup paddling, surfing, or kayaking even more intuitive with e-boost, reverse gear, exchangeable batteries, and a remote control with a 1.3 inch full-colour HD display.
Sports equipment with an electric drive is becoming more and more popular: e-bikes long ago overtook conventional bicycles, for example. In water sports, the e-mobility startup JAYKAY GmbH from Kressbronn am Bodensee, Germany is driving this trend. Their e-Fin turns stand-up paddling into a stroll on the water, efficiently supported by a 360 watt paddling assistant.
With up to six hours battery life, stand-up paddlers can cover significant distances with ease. Along with the increased fun factor, an e-drive offers increased safety: the e-Fin can make all the difference in a safe return to shore when facing a strong current. Depending on the board and overall weight, speeds up to 8kmh (5mph) are possible.
Following its successful launch in 2022, version 2.0 is now on the market. This evolution offers a host of new features, such as three operating modes each with both forward and reverse. “Paddle“ mode conserves the paddler’s energy on the water. In “Cruise” mode a cruise control function drives the board smoothly and easily. “Drive” mode enhances manoeuvrability, especially when parking the board. When there is a lot of traffic on the water, the braking function helps avoid accidental contact.
The new remote control, with its intuitive HD display and integrated paddle stroke counter, provides a strong connection with the e-Fin in any water conditions. Modular construction means motor, propeller, and –a new feature– the lithium battery can easily be exchanged or replaced without needing to replace the entire fin. This makes the system extremely flexible and sustainable. Just bring along an extra battery in your pack to really extend your trip on the water. All technical components, such as battery and all electronics, benefit from a completely integrated construction contained within the fin, just as the previous model did.
“The new e-Fin is the ideal combination of performance, function, and the optimal design required for very limited space”, says Daniel Jäger, one of JAYKAY’s three directors. “With our sustainable e-drives we’re revolutionising water sports and pushing progress in other areas.” Along with sport and leisure activities, JAYKAY also has its eyes on applications in the medical field: currently the engineers are working on specialised drives for wheelchairs, for example.
An overview of new features of the e-Fin 2.0 from JAYKAY:
The e-Fin 2.0 is available on pre-order beginning easter 2024, for 399€ instead of the usual 499€ suggested msrp. Please see jaykay-sport.de for more information.
A passion for skateboarding and surfing inspired Daniel Jäger, Benedict Kuhlmann and Isabell Armbruster-Kuhlmann to develop the perfect electric drive unit for longboards in their garage workshop in Kressbronn am Bodensee, Germany. A patent was granted in 2015. Two years later they founded the e-mobility startup JAYKAY and today they develop smart, electric micro-drives and drive shafts for skateboarding, water sports, and numerous other areas of daily life.
