More navigational power and a quicker/clearer view of the seabed.
Garmin GPSMAP 16×3
Garmin’s new GPSMAP 16×3 is the latest addition to the GPSMAP x3 range. This big 16in MFD has the same easy-to-use features, including built-in Garmin Navionics+ mapping and sonar support, but now in a high-resolution full-HD 16in touch screen display. For superior clarity and sunlight readability, its in-plane switching (IPS) display provides consistent and accurate colours, which can be seen from all viewing angles, even with polarised sunglasses.
Key GPSMAP points of note include simple navigation, whereby the skipper can confidently navigate coastal and inland waters with Garmin Navionics+ mapping with Auto Guidance+ technology, which includes a one-year subscription with daily updates. Users can also add Garmin Navionics Vision+ for premium features like high-resolution relief shading and more. There is plenty of powerful processing power, providing fast and responsive high-speed system operation. The sonar combo versions (GPSMAP xsv series) offer built-in support for ultra-high-definition ClearVu and SideVu scanning sonar, with high-contrast vivid colour palettes helping to distinguish fish from structure, along with CHIRP traditional sonar.
The MFD supports the full line-up of Garmin Panoptix sonar, including LiveScope – a live-scanning sonar. When integrated with a Garmin Force trolling motor, anglers can create routes, patterns and tracks for the trolling motor to follow while they fish. From the MFD they can also control speed, check battery life and more. GPSMAP offers seamless connectivity, making it compatible with sonar, autopilot, radars, instruments, cameras via NMEA 2000 and the Garmin Marine Network. Built-in Wi-Fi enables reliable software updates, or smart notifications via the ActiveCaptain app.
Panoptix PS70 live sonar for deep-sea fishing
The Panoptix PS70 is the latest addition to Garmin’s sonar range. Powered by Garmin’s RapidReturn sonar technology, the PS70 gives fishermen a real-time view of what’s below the surface at greater depths than before. It is claimed to be the fastest live sonar at 1,000ft on the market, providing a smooth video-like view, which updates at a minimum rate of 10 frames per second – six to eight times faster than the leading competitor at this depth.
Garmin RapidReturn sets the standard for offshore live sonar – from small baitfish to target game fish – in real time. With an 800W power output, the PS70 gives fishermen stronger sonar penetration and delivers four unique sonar modes that can be easily adjusted to fit a wide array of fishing techniques. With LiveVu Down, anglers can see small baitfish and target game fish in real time, right down to 1,000ft below the boat, while the 120-degree beam covers a big area of water. RealVu 3D Historical is historical scanning technology, which helps find fish and build a map of the ocean floor while the boat is moving. It shows the entire water column in 3D, from the bottom to the surface and all fish in between. The True Motion 3D Sonar Returns feature follows the vessel’s course over the ground. The stainless steel through-hull PS70 transducer is equipped with image stabilisation, allowing it to continuously adjust the sonar beams to compensate for boat motion. With enhanced QuickDraw Contours, anglers can survey wide areas at depths of up to 1,000ft, making it easy to view and store detailed contour maps. Users have the option to contribute their data to the QuickDraw Community so it can be integrated into Garmin Navionics+ charts, or keep their contours saved to their MFD. The PS70 transducer can be flush or pocket mounted.
